Is Magic Suitable For All Ages?

I would love to say that magic is suitable for all ages, however we all know that a new-born baby won’t find my card tricks impressive! Each age group reacts to magic in different ways and in my opinion, magic is suitable for anyone aged from 5 to 105. In fact, I have performed at children’s parties and even for a 95th birthday party!

One of my most recent gigs really put this to the test. I performed a one hour intimate parlour show inside a lovely conservatory for a small group of people, aged between 6 and 80. My main goal was to ensure that every ‘children’s magic trick’ was also astonishing for the adults, and every ‘adult’s magic trick’ was still mind-blowing for the children.

Presentation plays a huge part in the suitability of magic and a story can really transform the effectiveness of a routine. For example, a classic in magic is transforming three different lengths of rope to all become the same length.

This routine can be performed for children by talking about ‘Goldilocks and the three bears’ or it can be based around a ‘size doesn’t matter’ routine. My point being, magic can be made suitable for any age and it’s important to realise who you are performing to and what is appropriate.
